Information

A comprehensive course for non-electronic engineers to gain insight, practical knowledge and skills in analog and digital electronics, essential to work in projects together with electronic engineers, and to learn how to handle electronic measurement instruments. 43 lessons divided over 17 meetings of 3 hours (evening) and 13 meetings of 6 hours (afternoon + evening). Including four tests.

After completion of this course the participant has gained:

- basic knowledge of electronics to ease communication with analog and digital electronic engineers;

- practical experience with electrical measurements and equipment, simple usage of analog and digital simulators.

Intended for

The course is intended for a technical college/ university level and for engineers working in research, development and/or engineering.

Programme

This course contains three modules for which can be enrolled individually. Module 2 is best taken after completion of module 1, module 3 is more self-contained.

Module 1: Basic electronics, circuit theory (26 hrs, 1 test)

Basic circuit theory (keywords: charge, work, power, resistance, symbols, voltage, current, battery, series networks, parallel networks, Kirchhoff laws, superposition, Thevenin equivalent, Norton equivalent, max power transfer, capacitors, inductors, transient behaviour of RC and RL networks, AC behaviour of RLC, impedance, admittance, filters, resonance). Passive component selection and hands-on practice with measurement equipment, Spice simulator and its application. Reading circuit diagrams.

Module 2: Basic analog electronics (55 hrs, 2 tests)

Semiconductor technology, diodes, bipolar junction transistors, FETs, MOS transistors, amplifier theory, switching transistors, power output stages, ICs, feedback theory, operational amplifier and its application. Component specifications, temperature influence. Instrumentation amplifiers. Power supplies (linear and SMPS). Oscillators (introduction to phase-locked loops).

Module 3: Basic digital electronics (45 hrs, 1 test)

Introduction to digital electronics, boolean operators and logic, Karnaugh maps, number systems, memory, counters, standard logic families, specifications and interfaces, introduction microprocessor, introduction programmable logic, introduction VHDL and digital design, AD and DA converters, EMC, simple communication busses. Hands-on digital logic simulation including VHDL.

Duration: study load 5 hours a course week. Methods: lectures, demonstrations, exercises, assignments, handson, tests. Course material: book, handouts. Award: diploma or certificate, dependant on the results of the four tests.

This course is part of the Certified Precision Engineer program of the Dutch Society for Precision Engineering (DSPE). Participants receive a certificate of The High Tech Institute and a sub-certificate of the DSPE dependent on the results of the four tests.
