The Design for Sustainability training gives you as an engineer tools to develop and optimise products and/or systems with minimal footprint.

By using Design for Sustainability methodology, you can save material impact, realise more efficient production deployment and reduce environmental impact risks during production, use and re-use. Using the same methodology, you can also test and reduce energy consumption.

This training is available for in-company sessions and can be adapted to your situation and special needs.

Objective

After attending this training, you can apply the following:

  • Knowledge of System Thinking in relation to sustainability, Whole System Mapping on behalf of your own company-specific methodologies
  • The basics of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). You learn how to apply the knowledge quickly and effectively within your own products and projects.
  • An overview of renewable energy sources and techniques.
  • Sustainable selection of materials. You learn how to quickly and effectively make choices for sustainable materials and surface treatments.
  • Know how to make a product circular.

Program

Daypart 1 and 2:

The first part of the day addresses the question: why should I care about sustainability? We dive into various sustainable developments. We look at the Whole System model and briefly touch on measuring sustainability.

In the 2nd part, we will look at measuring sustainability using the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) method and get to work more practically with the Whole System model. We will show you which components are important, how to perform the LCA and what lessons can be learned. We end with a measurement of the carbon footprint of a product or process.


Daypart 3 and 4:

Daypart 3 will explain Tools that are readily available to an engineer to make a good design. Material Selection, Design for Circularity, lightweigting and energy effectiveness are these tools that are used in a practical way to become familiar with them.

On the fourth part, the tools are applied to a design of the trainee's own choice, in which the trainee can bring along his own case. The perfect design is still in the design/concept phase. The engineer, under supervision, will start working with all tools learned to become further familiar with sustainability tools.

The information of the above half-day sessions may overlap or be explained in a different order.
